Cumulative positive contributions of propagating ISO to the quick low-level atmospheric response during El Niño developing years

چکیده

Based on the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) El Niño alert system, this study investigates atmospheric and oceanic conditions during developing years between 1982 2016. It is found that there a 2–5-month (subseasonal-to-seasonal) lag to establish steady low-level (or Southern Oscillation Index, SOI) response than Niño-pattern Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (SSTA), which defined as critical period in research. According duration period, quick slow can be identified among all Niño–Southern (ENSO) events. The establishments Level Pressure (SLPA) tropical atmosphere are proved closely related Intra-seasonal (ISO) In years, ISO events even propagate eastern Pacific, lead cumulative negative Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) SLP anomalies there, make positive contribution at end period. However, eastward-propagation mainly restricted Western Pacific causing with almost no contributions from ISO. Furthermore, observations several simulations used understand propagation differences years.

Enhanced Atlantic freshwater export during El Niño

Using two reanalysis data sets, the influence of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the surface freshwater balance of the Atlantic ocean is examined. We present evidence that the transport of water vapour out of the tropical Atlantic is enhanced during warm ENSO phases, while it is reduced during cold phases. These tropical changes alter the freshwater budget of the entire Atlantic drainage...

The “ Normality ” of El Niño

The amplitude of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) would be normally distributed if the coupled Pacific ocean-atmosphere were a linear system forced by Gaussian weather noise. Moment estimates of skewness and kurtosis demonstrate that this is not the case for monthly mean anomalies in Pacific sea surface temperatures during 1950-97. The noted predominance of El Niño events compared to La ...

Life History Plasticity of a Tropical Seabird in Response to El Niño Anomalies during Early Life

Food shortage and other challenges associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) experienced early in life may have long-term impacts on life history traits, but these potential impacts remain virtually unexplored. By monitoring 2556 blue-footed boobies from 11 cohorts, we showed that birds facing warm water ENSO conditions (and probably low food availability) in the natal year were under...

Unraveling the mystery of Indian monsoon failure during El Niño .

The 132-year historical rainfall record reveals that severe droughts in India have always been accompanied by El Niño events. Yet El Niño events have not always produced severe droughts. We show that El Niño events with the warmest sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific are more effective in focusing drought-producing subsidence over India than events with the...

Sea level height , sea surface temperature , and tuna yields in the Panama bight during El Niño

Between 1988 and 1998, annual tuna landings at Buenaventura (Colombian Pacific) are correlated with the sea surface temperature in the central Equatorial Pacific (r=0.78, p<0.05) and the sea level height at Buenaventura (r=0.76, p<0.05) and Balboa (Panama) (r=0.79, p<0.05). Seasonal oceanic upwelling is forced by the Panama wind jet, which may favour oceanic fisheries such as tuna. Here we firs...
